Charlie did an awesome job checking over my car for me before I leave on a big road trip next week. He was thorough and efficient and answered all my questions. I have no doubt that the RAV will live to see another day (or 10,000kms). Thanks again Charlie! I would highly recommend CB Auto Service and will be taking my car to him again. FAQs
What is a basic service?
A basic service is the baseline routine maintenance your car needs to be safe and reliable. It’s often called different names, like a minor service or an essential service etc. Basically they all mean the same thing, but depending on the workshop can be handled very differently.
A basic car service is essentially an engine oil change with a series of visual inspections of the key components and systems of the car including things like the brakes, tyres, suspension, exterior lighting etc. That’s the difference between just an oil change and a car service – an oil change alone isn’t enough as it doesn’t include a thorough check of the vehicle.
At CB Auto Service we pride ourselves on providing a comprehensive basic service designed to focus on the most important things – those that will keep your car as safe and reliable as possible
How much does a car service cost?
The cost of a car service depends on the type of vehicle, the type of service needed, the parts and how long the service will take.
For a basic car service (or minor car service as it’s also called) the key factor in determining how much a service will cost is the engine oil change – the quantity and quality of engine oil and the type of oil filter needed. Since every vehicle will have different requirements, the cost of car service will also vary.
When you see a fixed price for a car service, which some places may offer, that price has been set on a number of assumptions and more than likely a certain type of oil, which may be completely unsuitable for your vehicle, may end up causing engine damage and reduce the reliability the lifespan of your car. Especially if the price is too good to be true!
How often should you service your car?
The frequency of car servicing depends on the type of service, the make and model of the car, the car’s warranty, and how you drive the car. There are two periods of car life: under warranty and outside of warranty.
Generally speaking, a basic car service is recommended every six months or every 10,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) when outside of your warranty.
Cars are expensive and complex machines with many moving parts and complicated systems, and like any complex machine require regular maintenance. Generally we use our cars everyday and rely on our cars to get us to where we need to go.
To keep your car safe and reliable, regular car servicing is essential. This is because everything important is inspected and checked to ensure that any potential problems are identified before they turn into serious issues.
Just one example, during a basic service your battery will be checked. If it’s tested and shows signs of being weak, then replacing it will ensure you won’t be left stranded with a car that won’t start (let’s be honest if it’s going to happen then it will likely happen at the worst possible time too). As a driver and non-mechanical person, you might not be able to tell any symptoms of a bad battery, since they have a nasty habit of failing completely unexpectedly.
Bottom line, if you get your car serviced regularly it will be in better condition, safer, more reliable, last longer and be worth more if you decide to sell it.
How can car owners keep service costs down?
Owning and maintaining a car can be expensive, so it’s understandable that we all want to keep the costs down.
Car maintenance really involves two main things; regular car servicing (routine maintenance) and repairs which may be required periodically (for example replacing brakes, or a battery etc). Understanding the correct type of regular servicing for your vehicle is the first step toward keeping the costs down. If you are outside of your car’s warranty period then you can perform a basic service rather than a log book service.
Regular servicing is then the second step. This is because everything important is inspected and checked to ensure that any potential problems are identified before they turn into serious issues which may be avoidable, leading to costly to repair.
