Most people know that tyres need to be checked from time to time, but not enough people do it on a regular basis. Checking your tyre pressures regularly is really important not just for your safety, but also fuel economy and mechanical wear and tear of your vehicle. We need tyres to be in great condition as we depend on them for safety. Fortunately keeping your tyres in good condition is very simple to do as most service stations will have an air inflator.
Practically you should aim to check your tyres once a month. The first thing you’re looking to do is ensure that the air pressure is correct. There is no exact hard and fast rule which applies to every car to what this should be, but tyres will be given a maximum pressure which is generally printed on the side of the tyre. As a rule of thumb for most passenger cars somewhere between 30 – 40 PSI or roughly 200 – 275 KPA is acceptable. As you check the pressure of each tyre make a note of what the pressure is to compare to the other tyres. A tyre with a pressure significantly lower than the others could indicate a leak. Tyres should be the same pressure left side to right side, but they can be different pressures front to back. The key is to make sure the pressure is even between the sides, as this can cause excessive tyre wear.
As you’re inflating the tyre, take a look at the condition and see if the tyre is excessively worn or has signs of damage. There is a legal limit to how worn a tyre can be, and generally there will be small wear indicators in the tread of the tyre to show this. If in doubt it’s a good idea to get your tyres professionally checked to ensure they are as safe as possible.
