Clutch Replacement - What You Need To Know
What is a clutch?
A clutch is found in a manual transmission vehicle. Essentially it’s the component which connects the engine to the rear wheels through the gearbox.
A clutch is used to smoothly engage and disengage the power of the engine. When you push your foot on the clutch pedal, force is transferred via a cable or hydraulic pressure to the clutch assembly to disengage the engine from the gearbox. This allows you to smoothly move the vehicle off from a stop and also change gears.
How do I know if I need a new clutch?
Signs of a bad clutch include the following:
✓ Any abnormal noises when you put your foot on the clutch pedal, such as a whirring or grinding, or when holding your foot on the clutch pedal.
✓ Difficulty in changing gear, sometimes a crunching when you shift.
✓ A change in the “biting point” of the clutch from normal – the position in which the clutch begins to engage as you lift up the pedal.
✓ A slipping clutch, often under acceleration you’ll hear the engine rev up but your road speed won’t increase proportionally or at all
How much does a replacement clutch cost?
Clutches are not cheap components and require a reasonable amount of labour to replace since the vehicle’s gearbox needs to be removed to access the clutch. Generally speaking a new clutch will cost between $1000 – $1500 for most vehicles and even more for 4WD and luxury / exotic vehicles. It’s important then to make sure that a clutch issue is correctly diagnosed before investing the money in a replacement unit.
The first step in replacing your clutch is an accurate diagnosis. This will involve checking the operation and performance of the clutch itself together with the operating mechanism.
