What is a Battery?
Most people will know what a battery is - the world we live in today practically runs on batteries! Just like your mobile phone, a car is a “mobile” electronic device which also needs a battery. All batteries work in the same way, an energy storage device which uses chemicals to produce electricity. When we use a battery those chemicals are producing energy, then when the battery is empty we can recharge the battery to replenish the energy. A car battery generally uses lead and a type of acid to store energy, which is why they are sometimes called “lead acid batteries”. Most people are aware that a car has a battery. A battery serves two purposes in your car: to provide all the electrical power when the engine is not running, and then to stabilize the electrical power supply when the engine is running. The primary use of the battery is to start your car which takes a lot of power, making it an essential component.
What are the signs that you need a new car battery?
How do you know if your car battery needs replacement? Just like the battery in your phone, and in fact any battery, over time the capacity of a car battery will reduce until the point at which is will be difficult to retain a charge. Adding to this a car battery is generally working in a fairly hostile environment under the bonnet of your car exposed to a lot of heat, vibration and stress.
The unfortunate thing with car batteries is often they will fail quickly with little to no warning, and from one minute to the next will stop working. The most obvious sign of a flat battery is that nothing happens when you try to start the car.
However in some cases you may notice the car difficult to start – it may take longer than normal and you may even hear a different sound as the starter motor struggles to start the engine. Sometimes a very rapid clicking can be heard which is the sound of the starting circuit trying to work with a lower voltage than usual. Also you may notice that the lights on the dashboard do not illuminate as well as they do normally, or flicker as you try to start the car. Less obvious signs are electrical abnormalities or gremlins such as flickering lights or even poor performance whilst the engine is running as the battery is failing to stabilize the power supply correctly.

Generally speaking, a new car battery will cost between $500 and $1000 or even higher in some cases depending on the vehicle and engine size. The average life of a car battery is approximately five years. It’s crucial to ensure that a battery issue is correctly diagnosed before investing the money in a replacement, as there are other factors than the battery itself which can lead to it going flat.

Charlie is a great guy he performed a logbook service on my car, he arrived on time, his work is very clean and meticulous attention to detail.
